If you plan to go past Lone Pine Lake, you will need a permit. You can either apply in advance during the February lottery or try for a day of permit. Permits are hard to get due to the popularity of reaching the summit of Mt Whitney, the tallest mountain in the lower 48. The trail to Whitney is 11... 更多
Scenery and views are truly spectacular and reaching the summit is very satisfying. Did as a day hike. Starting at 3am it was an exhausting 16 hours. Did a couple of walks in the surrounding area two days before to acclimatize to the altitude, but even with that the altitude still hits you. Came woefully under prepared as there was... 更多
If this is specifically for hiking the trail for Mt Whitney, then ignore my review. We drove up the road to the trail head with no intention to hike. Hung out at trail head area and enjoyed the heights and outdoors around us. Definitely worth the drive if in Lone Pine area.
If you want a refreshing break from the desert heat take the 11+mile drive to a waterfall and forest area. Usually 20 degrees collar than the desert floor

Camped at Whitney portal over the weekend. I was very concerned if I could make it up or not but I had little trouble doing so. It's defiantly strenuous if your not in the best physical shape. We started our hike Saturday morning at 5am. It was cold in the am but as you started climbing it defiantly warmed up... 更多
Climbed the mountain via the mountaineers route at the end of May - very steep in places and mostly snow above upper boy scout lake, where we base-camped. Huge exposure in places, so lots of adrenaline, but a great feeling to summit!
Such an awesome trail. We hiked 3 miles up to the first lake. It was beautiful. Definitely worth it. FYI - If you plan to hike further or do an overnight you need a permit.
If Whitney Portal doesn't take your breath away, then you're not breathing. And then again, it may be the 8,000 foot altitude. There's a beautiful crystal clear pond that kids and "older kids" love to fish. The pond is watered by a beautiful cascading waterfall. It's a wonderful way to escape the heat of the valley below in July or... 更多
