This house turned museum is well worth the hour or two to learn more about the Western history in San Diego County. Yes, there are still cowboys in East County. The museum collection is not only one of Wieghorst paintings and memorabilia, but also other Western stuff as well. Visitors and residents alike should take the time to visit!
Why more people don't know about the Weighorst is a mystery. It's great local history in the heart of downtown El Cajon surrounded by galleries, fashion shops, and really good restaurants! Olaf Wieghorst was a fabulous artist who grew up in El Cajon. The WWHC is housed in the very place that Olaf lived in. This is the integral part of El Cajon for so long before it added the mall. Olaf Wieghorst was a talented artist of the Western genre. The museum is housed the the old adobe home that he lived in on Renette Ave. In El Cajon, a few blocks from where it sits now.
I love love love the cactus garden. Lots of unusual varieties with spiny spines and without. Olaf Wieghorse settled in El Cajon and has captured the old west in his wonderful paintings. If you Blink you will miss this museum. If you like American Art or Western Displays, then you have to make this a must stop while in San Diego. They have his house and a small Strip mall Art Gallery. The docens are top noch and show they care about Wieghorst and his Art.
