This is a true gem that has both authenticity to its 1860 style home and a true garden from that time. The staff is very keen on informing you about the life and whereabouts of Runeberg. Remember to visit one of his sons sculptures nearby.
Runerberg's home is the first home museum in Finland, it has exiting stories, wonderful paintings, their furniture and interesting things.
It is a big, yellow wooden house, left as it was when Johan Ludvig Runeberg lived there with his wife Fredrika in the 19th century. He wrote the rhymed epic story from the Swedish-Russian war 1808-1809 and other historic masterpieces--as well as the National Anthem of Finland (in Swedish). J.L. Runeberg's home museum is like a time travel to the 19th century. Although all the items are not original Runeberg household contents, the collection fits perfectly to the museum. We only visited outside in the garden and playground. Inside the yard you find a nice playground for younger kids and it's free. There is possibility to do traditional tasks like fish, be a market seller, pump water from well, collect eggs, nurse horse and piggs inside an old barn. I visited Runeberg Home with my kids (10 & 7) who are big fans of Mauri Kunnas books. They were absolutely thrilled! As their parent, I would not have expected that Runeberg Home will be their favorite. "Look, the ladders from the book!"
