We went in March and there was very little in the bird viewing arena, but there is amazing scenery in this area and a great place to visit for everyone that appreciates the outdoors.
Cave Creek Canyon isn't on your way to anywhere, out in the "middle of nowhere" basin-&-range country on the AZ / NM border. But for birding, camping, hiking & simply relaxing it's a destination unto itself. Beautiful, burbling Cave Creek flows down this mostly narrow canyon amid the Chiricahua Mountains, enveloped by many different types of evergreens & an interesting... 更多
This is one of the best areas for sightseeing, birding, hiking and relaxation. We camped and enjoyed every minute of it. Clean, well kept campsites surrounded by beautiful trees and the canyon walls. Many great birding spots can be found in the canyon and nearby.
I was with the Carolina Bird Club and we saw a pair of elegant trogons, a target bird for this place and Arizona woodpeckers. The scenery is spectacular.
Our trip to the Chiricahua Mountains which is nestled in the Coronado National Forest was the most amazing adventure! Wild Javelina, White Tailed Deer, Wild Turkey, birds of all kinds, Skunk, the occasional Bear, the occasional snake, lizards abundant, springs and creeks flowing with water this time of year, I recommend it highly to the outdoors enthusiast, we visited 4... 更多
We took the South Fork Trail and enjoyed the hike. There were more folks hiking and riding bicycles than we expected to see, which was good because the birders were happy to share their sightings.
Great hiking trail for birders. It was early in the season but we listened for the call of the elegant trogon anyway. No luck this trip. This bird is known to be seen on this trail later in the season. We were fortunate enough to see early migrants (birds), warblers and woodpeckers were seen and heard: Acorn woodpeckers, painted redstarts,... 更多
No pictures can do this canyon justice. The colors of the canyons walls are incredible. There is a BLM visitor’s center on 42 Forest Road but it is only open 3 days a week (Fri-Sun). The buildings around the visitor’s center were built by the CCC in the 1930’s. There is also the Southwestern Research Station along the road but... 更多
If you like to bird and hike, this is the place for you. The natural beauty is outstanding. Do be aware that Cave Creek Canyon is located in a fairly remote location. The nearest full service grocery store is sixty miles away. There are also no gas stations nearby. We enjoyed a wonderful hike up the Silver Peak Trail, although... 更多
I've been to cave creek many times. It's a great place to relax, listen to the water, hike, view wildlife, and camp.
