The synagogue of Tomar is kept by an elderly lady who makes a point on keeping the dwindling Jewish heritage and community of Tomar alive. Take the visit to support her, it takes only a few minutes to listen to the history of the synagogue (one of the oldest in Portugal).
Yes, it is old. Yes, its historical value is unquestionable, but this synagog is still in a rather sorry state. The synagogue is a little bit hidden, but worth visiting. So on the way to the castle of when going back to the old town do not hesitate to devote a few minutes of your time to feel the history once again.
Very interesting historical site. It is amazing that the Knights Templar, who built the original city, would build a Temple for the Jewish people residing in the area, since they were under Papal direction. Very interesting and worth a visit if you are in Tomar.

This is a rehabilitation of a synagogue from the time of the displacement of jews in Portugal. A very interesting and instructive visit.
Historically a very important building and part of Tomar's history. The lady at the counter makes sure to point out the great accoustics inside. There are a few interesting artifacts inside. Mainly just stopping in to see this very important part of Tomar's past. Very small, cozy and intimate feel inside.
