Really uplifting, despite the Hector Pieterson Memorial - which is a must see. Would recommend to anyone. The guide, Nipoh (sorry for the spelling errors) was really helpful and good at his job.
When visiting South Africa, and Johannesburg in particular, it is important to see how the people live, work and their history. Took and excellent guided tour, with many stops, and then visited the Hector Petersen Museum.
I had a vision of Soweto as being a large squatter encampment but was amazed to find that it is a vibrant, modern city. It's population is 4 million (Jo'burg itself is 7 million) and it includes modern shopping malls and so on. Soweto is the largest township in Johannesburg. It is miles in all directions and very hard to navigate without an expert guide. We requested a special tour of the Kliptown area , Station Road, and a tour of the most impressive Kliptown Youth Program. I visited Soweto in February 2014 and was glad I did. See the homes and streets where famous anti-apartheid freedom fighters like Nelson Mandela lived in. Lots of art work on sale. Also visit the mall and see the other side of Johannesburg you would not otherwise have known exist.
