Although the tunnel is a short ride I feel like it is a must see. The story for Whittier is pretty interesting and I think if you are in the area this has to be a stop. On land there is only one way in to the small town and it's through this tunnel. The gates close at 11 pm... 更多
We chose to drive Alaska and found this wonderful gem. The Anton Tunnel was an excellent experience. Along with sharing a tunnel with a train (waiting our turn of course), learning the history of it along with the history of the town and it's oddities sure added to our trip. I would definitely enjoy revisiting both the tunnel and town.... 更多
With the exception of having to wait to go through the tunnel on the hour or half hour, it was still cool to go through a tunnel that is two miles long. Thank goodness the day we went it wasn't too cold so I got out of the car to take pictures of the area. Then on the other side... 更多
Fascinating experience to drive through a train tunnel and to have to wait for access as the traffic is one way. This is the only way to drive to Whittier and well worth the trip.
It is interesting that this tunnel is one way. It is used off and on all day long for automobile traffic and for railroad traffic.
Tunnel was fantastic & the Alaskan people are some of the friendliest we have ever met. Albeit one. The toll collector at the Whittier tunnel was rude and obnoxious. She was obviously disgusted with life and her job. Our recommendation for this native Alaskan... quite and go do something that doesn't involve people.
What a dramatic and unique way to get to Whittier! The line wasn't bad at all and it made the trip for my then 6 yr old more adventurous! This was July 2011.
Took our pick up camper through the tunnel, no problem. One way traffic, so check the schedule, but the wait is not bad. No problem with our 10.5 foot Bigfoot camper. Only takes about 10 minutes to get through tunnel. Very slick. Cost us $13, which we felt was not bad.
Small long tunnel for access to Whittier. Plan your trips accordingly to not have to wait long for the direction of travel you are going, as this tunnel is one-way traffic only while splitting the time with the train.
This tunnel was amazing!!!!! It seems to go forever and is rough, like they have just finished blasting through. To go to Whittier, you start on the half hour and when returning, it is on the hour. If you are lucky, you will also see the train come through the same tunnel..Regretfully though absolutely everything was closed when we went... 更多
