Alaska is filled with beautiful scenic drives. This tunnel is just another type of feature that makes driving to Whittier a unique experience. We had read the information online about how the tunnel operates and its construction. We really enjoyed the unusual tunnel. The staging area is simple and fast in our experience. The most difficult thing is of course... 更多
You have to wait to get into the tunnel, they let cars go each way every 1/2 hour. It is worth waiting and seeing Whittier, taking a hike and checking out the great view of the glacier.
As of July, $13 round trip for cars. Into Whittier, tunnel is open on the :30 hr. Out of Whittier, tunnel open on the hour. Watch your speed from highway to/from tunnel (and throughout southern Alaska, really). Cops will give you a speeding ticket at 5 miles over speed limit!
It was kind of weird to think there was only one way out by car. Don't go if you don't like tunnels, it's about 2 miles through the bottom of the mountain. And you need to know the schedule. It's in or out on the half hour and I guess you have to wait for the train to take it's... 更多
Now, who reviews tunnels? Well, this one is special since it cars share it with the train. It certainly opened Whittier up to tourism and that's ok since it's an interesting little town. Check out the museum for a little history about the tunnel and how it was built. It costs $12, is 2 1/2 miles long and the speed... 更多
Need to drive through this tunnel! One of the longest if not the longest in North America. Read the history and you'll appreciate it even more. Check the tunnel schedule if you're driving because you share it with the train. Don't forget to stop in Girdwood for a hike on Winner Creek Trail by Hotel Alyeska.
We travel from Kenai to anchorage regularly and decided to make a detour down this road. We reached the toll unaware there was a toll but paid anyway to see. Cool and interesting. Went through the tunnel to other side and it was a small town. Didn't have a lot of time to see anything but visited the hallway where... 更多
So glad we went to Whittier and did this trip. Can do in one day Well organised and Whittier is so cute We called in there on the slacken ferry and decided to go back to see Whittier again and drive the tunnel
This tunnel is a necessary if you want to drive to or from Whittier. It is an engineering marvel because at the time it was built there weren't any fancy electronics to aid the builders. When the two side punched through they were perfect. It even survived the earthquake of 1964! Short wait to travel in this over 2 mile... 更多
