Tunnel was fantastic & the Alaskan people are some of the friendliest we have ever met. Albeit one. The toll collector at the Whittier tunnel was rude and obnoxious. She was obviously disgusted with life and her job. Our recommendation for this native Alaskan... quite and go do something that doesn't involve people.
What a dramatic and unique way to get to Whittier! The line wasn't bad at all and it made the trip for my then 6 yr old more adventurous! This was July 2011.
Took our pick up camper through the tunnel, no problem. One way traffic, so check the schedule, but the wait is not bad. No problem with our 10.5 foot Bigfoot camper. Only takes about 10 minutes to get through tunnel. Very slick. Cost us $13, which we felt was not bad.
Small long tunnel for access to Whittier. Plan your trips accordingly to not have to wait long for the direction of travel you are going, as this tunnel is one-way traffic only while splitting the time with the train.
This tunnel was amazing!!!!! It seems to go forever and is rough, like they have just finished blasting through. To go to Whittier, you start on the half hour and when returning, it is on the hour. If you are lucky, you will also see the train come through the same tunnel..Regretfully though absolutely everything was closed when we went... 更多
We waited about 1/2 hour. It is long, dark but it is nothing scary. No passing traffic, one way traffic. Don't miss the last run or you're in whittier for the night.
One way which changes direction at intervals. Narrow, just wide enough for a train. About 3 miles and 6 minutes at 25 mph max. Only land route in and out of the small town of Whittier AK. A $12 toll to go to Whittier and return. We went early for a cruise and had only a few vehicles in line.... 更多
Even if you do not need to go out to Whittier for anything - I recommend taking the tunnel out and back. it is really incredible what they have done with this tunnel - alternating car and rail traffic, in one tunnel - very ingenious.. Whittier itself is not much to see - but grab a bite at the Wild... 更多
We drove a 30 foot motorhome thru this tunnel. It was a great experience. They have 3 lines for cars to line up, 1also for each - motorhomes, semi trucks and oversized vehicles. There are stop n go lights for each line. There is also a light so each of the vehicles are spaced at the right spacing. It was... 更多
