Set within an old fort, the Museo Nacional gives a full look at the development and evolution of the people of this area. The curators have laid a good foundation for this depiction although it could be more sophisticated in the exhibits. Interesting for it pre-Columbian exhibits and butterfly enclosure. It's also right beside the "crafts" market where you can pick up souvenirs, etc.
The butterfly building you walk through is interesting and the fort itself is pretty cool. Exhibits were sparse and wasn't nearly enough information posted about Costa Rican history. They seemed to skip major eras and there was a lot of overlap with the other museums.
My husband and I visited this museum on our last day in Costa Rica. When the military was dissolved in 1948, the fort was re-purposed, eventually into a museum.
