Fantastic if you like to see thousands of locals dressed in beautiful colourful traditional clothing, going about their own business on market day (Thursday). We were the only tourists in town and we definitely looked odd compared to the locals. We encountered lots of friendly smiles though.
We had an overnight stay here at Hotel Inti Sisa (literally the ONLY place to stay). Lucky for us, we were here on market day. Not so lucky for our driver who had a challenge navigating the narrow streets crammed with sheep, wagons and people in an attempt to deliver us to our lodging. They had everything you could think of! The people were really kind. I tried some of the food, and it was delicious. The women all wore beautiful hats, and they had a lot for sale as well. You could walk for hours. It was a very cool experience.
A great market, completely non-touristy but with extraordinary sights, also in the animal markets. Everything imaginable is tradedhere, from guinea pigs to potato sacks to hats and agricultural instruments.
My wife and I were traveling around Ecuador and have seen many markets. I think that this ranks at the top for the markets that we have seen so far.
A great place to visit to see indigenous people in a local market. It is spread over several streets and squares. Great to wander and look at the wide variety of goods on sale. After having been to the market in Otavolo I thought I knew what I was in for with Guamote but I couldn't have been more wrong. The sheer volume of people can be completely overwhelming.
