Greatly preserved history in a place where you don't expect to find anything. Your street car may dislike the road... take it easy, it deserves!
I try to visit in december and unfortunately was closed. Their message: we open only with prior reservation. Sad, from the distance looks nice to visit.
Nicopolis ad Istrum was a Roman town founded by Emperor Trajan around 106 in memory of his victory over the Dacians. All you can see there is authentic and it's really impressive. The route from big rocks, columns.. And it's easy to go there : from Veliko Tarnovo to Ruse it's about 20km, you turn for village Nikup ("Никюп"). I... 更多
Although only a section of the site has been excavated you are still able to get an idea of the great Roman architecture and ingenuity. Hopefully with time more will br revealed. Unfortunately many of the boards have been faded by the sun so having a knowledable guide really came in handy for me. The drainage system running under the... 更多
These are interesting ruins of the Roman city built to celebrate the Roman win over the Dacians. Getting there is a bit challenging though. If you drive you need satnav....there seem to be no signs from the Ruse / Veliko Tărnovo Rd. The guide there speaks no English...but there are signs in English...fading away.
Just after the entrance you can feel like a real Roman citizen - walking on the great road stones of a true Roman city. There could be seen well preserved canalization system, the remnants of an odeon, and the public forum. Excavation still continue, but the whole place, its beauty and silence is well worth the visit.

The officially sign on the signposted rough road has been amended from the 2 kms stipulated to a more accurate 12 kms. There is a more direct route that is... 更多
Not far from Veliko Turnovo, some nice ruins, off the beaten track. Just be aware that the roads leading to the ruins are terribly pot-holed, so it is slow-going to get to the site.
