I was astonished when I came upon this church. Never would I have imagined such a beautiful church in Rio. It's downtown in the Centro area which most tourist to Rio never go to, staying mostly in Copacabana and or Ipanema. If in Rio, I highly recomend going to Centro (downtown) at least once during your stay, and this church... 更多
The church is beautiful, if you like baroque, so of course it is dark and heavy. The church, although it looks like it is actual gold, it is wood carved gold painted. With all of the wood in the area they used that rather than the valuable gold (very different from the Spanish churches). There are altars that were for... 更多
I know that's a weird title but it's true. The chapel/church is stunning with all the gold. Literally everything but the pews and floors are gilded in gold. Quite a sight to see. However, it's depressing when you think about all the money spent to gild the church when that money could have feed the hungry and poor. It costs... 更多
Be aware closed on Monday. ( at least in June) spectacular Wooden gilded interior worth the visit . There is a small museum that is within the complex less interesting.
On the heart of the downtown area , on the Largo da Carioca, there are the only remanents of the Santo Antonio Hill ... Upside of this remanents, you can visit the Santo Antonio convent - which is for free and still being restorated . Inside of the complex of the convent, at right , there is the Museum of... 更多
This church is right next to Santo Antonio monastery (same complex) in Centro. You pay 5 reals to enter the church. The gilding is magnificent and something I've never seen before. Definitely worth spending 20-30 minutes admiring the beautiful work.
We visited during the Easter week and the church was packed with people. The atmosphere is amazingly powerful. The entrance to the church is a bit hidden as they are doing some refurbishment work. Striking contrast between the modern buildings around and the humble church
The gilding in the church is astounding and is the main draw for the tourist and the faithful alike. The monatery at the side has a pleasant tea garden.
I cannot really debate the theological aspect of putting something like 500 kilos of gold onto the ceiling of your house of worship while regular folks have no access to clean water or regular sanitation. But! The church is beautiful and amazing inside. Well worth a visit, of course. Tells you something about Brazil and Rio and other things, of... 更多
