It's a bit of a drive to see typical Asian small scale dock activity. It's quite nice to see and people are friendly. They ask you to make a picture of them without asking for money afterwards. But if you've seen Asian small scale boats and dock work not much reason to go here
Tourists have to pay 20,000 Rp for entrance free - locals go in free. It's a busy port with lots of fishermen around... makes for a good photo op. Actually, I come to Paotere for hunting photo.. hehehe.. But I also buy some fishes, shrimps, and calamari for our lunch. Very nice to see early morning activities of fishermen and the buyers at the TPI (tempat pelelangan ikan) or fish market. Feels like the old school of the 60's sea port .Poatere still maintain its traditional port services to all trading destinations of Makassar.Here you can see lots of Phinisi ships large and small lining up in the harbour.Really an awesome sight and great for shutterbugs! Really get the feel of a working port with boats of all sizes - boats to be used, repaired and left to the elements. Interesting area around - go there by becak a must - try to find Ali at the Fort he is a real character
