Start here at 10AM. Not much opens before that. The movie is well done and will give the background and understanding of the eight communities to know how to plan your visit. Most things close down at 5PM as does the museum.
This is a nice little museum. There is a 20 minute video telling some of the history of Amana colonies. Then you'll cross a courtyard where you can go into two separate buildings, one housing mostly written displays and some items of period use, the other about house work/chores in olden days. If tried to read all of the displays,... 更多
The video that is shown is worth the $7 that is charged. The fee also gets you into a couple other points of interest in other Amana towns. There are a couple of exhibits to see and the gentleman who was in charge was very knowledgeable about Amana History.
This was the starting point for our Amana Colonies tour. This is where you get your map and buy your tickets. Lots of history and shops in Amana.
Upon entering the Museum Gift Shop and Bookstore, you"ll be requested to pay to tour the museum facility. The tour begins with a movie explaining the settlement of Amana and its history and people. Next you walk to a nearby building which was once a residence but has been turned into a museum with many period artifacts and informative plaques.... 更多
I knew very little about the Amana Colonies, and the museum gives a very comprehensive history of the people and their philosophy. It's laid out very well, taking the visitor from one room to another. There are lots of interesting artifacts, and lots of signs explaining the exhibits, including excerpts from letters and diaries of members of the community in... 更多
Movie was 10 minutes late starting while the one employee chatted with last movie group. $7 per person seems reasonable. I enjoyed the display of old telephones most of all. The exterior seems to need a good deal of maintenance. Weeds growing in broken sidewalk area. The top floor had children's toys, many were hand carved. Loved that!
I hadn't even heard of the Amana Colonies until I moved to Iowa earlier this year. The museum starts you off with a 20 minute documentary about the origins of the community. You then can view a variety of exhibits that covers life as a member, the goods they made, etc.
We really enjoyed the visit. The film was wonderful giving terrific information about the history of the Colonies. The self-guided tour of the colony house was quite informative. It is certainly worthwhile!
My wife and I visited the Amana Heritage Museum on an afternoon when there were not many visitors about. We were met by a very friendly gentleman who was the caretaker of the museum and the chief guide/ interpreter. It turned out that he was a fourth generation resident of Amana, and that his family came with the original settlers.... 更多
