We only went here because our route down the 66 took us within a mile of the viewpoint. It may be a volcano but it's long extinct and too be honest looks more like a cylindrical coal heap. Sounds a bit unkind but there you go. It's also a mile out and another back to go and walk up close... 更多
Although this place is in the middle of nowhere, it is worth the drive. The crater is about a mile away from the parking lot so a very doable short hike, but if you go during warm weather be certain to bring lots of water. There is no water at the site. You will walk through black rock lava fields... 更多
Amazing to see Drive in to the parking area just past Roy's heading west You can walk to the edge and enter via a track at the rear inside the chamber feels surreal but that could just have been the 30 min walk to get there You can walk the rim but take water and give yourself at least 2... 更多
You don't get to see stuff like this everyday in California. Molten rock and a huge crater! We didn't get to go for the hike. I thought I saw on trip advisor there was a road that took you up but I think it was the wrong crater. It's beautiful and amazing! Must see!
I've seen hundreds of pics of the Amboy crater, but they really do not do justice to the actual size of the cone. The cone rises a good 250' above the surrounding landscape and can be prominently seen for miles. Entrance to the area is free and it is an un-staffed attraction. The road and parking area are clean and... 更多
Amboy Crater is just outside of what is left of the town of Amboy along the old Route 66 and National Trails Highway. The crater is definitely worth a stop if you are in the area. The area has nice restrooms, tables with shade, a wheelchair accessible observation area and history of the 10,000 year old cinder cone. There is... 更多
If you are following route 66 you should be on the lookout for this along the way while in Amboy. Its a photo op of US volcanic activity. You can hike over to it if you want as well if you have the time. Part of our Route 66 sojourn.
Amboy is a little bit out of the way (south of Mojave National Preserve and north of Joshua Tree National Park) as there is nowhere really close to stay unless you are camping, but I think it is absolutely worth visiting if you are in the area. As you are driving towards the crater along Route 66, you cannot miss... 更多
