Explore the Society of the Cincinnati's historic headquarters, Anderson House, a National Historic Landmark that has been the Society's home since 1938. The Society and its American Revolution Institute work to honor the men and women who won American independence in the Revolutionary War by supporting advanced study, presenting exhibitions and other public programs, advocating preservation, and providing resources to teachers and students. Tours of Anderson House reveal the history of the Society of the Cincinnati, the significance of the American Revolution, and the lives and collections of the home's first owners, Larz and Isabel Anderson. The mansion was completed in 1905 for the Andersons, a wealthy couple who devoted their lives to public service, travel, entertaining, collecting, and philanthropy-interests and activities that are reflected in Anderson House, where much of the couple's art collection and furnishings are still on display. Guided tours begin at 15 minutes past each hour. Anderson House also offers a changing exhibition gallery, a research library, and an active calendar of public programs.

I really enjoy visiting historic homes; not just for their history, but also for their architecture. This place was built to be a showplace. The place is almost overwhelming in its opulence, but I guess that was the point of the original owners. If you want to experience a little bit of the Gilded Age excesses, then check out Anderson... 更多

Truly an urban palace, even by European standards, the Anderson House is an amazing find that far too few visit. The home of America's oldest organization, the Society of Cincinatus, the building is rich in history, especially American and French. The decorations, artifacts and paintings are all truly special and worth an hour or so of perusing.

Selected this tour as a good activity on a rainy day with my carpenter husband and art loving mother, and it was a good choice. It's a free tour, and a very small group experience, so it moves at a leisurely pace, giving a fair amount of time to take in the rooms. I felt at a disadvantage not being... 更多

I went because I hade been told about the wonderful picture on the half landing and was not disappointed. I joined in a tour and then joined another to hear the bits I had missed. Both guides were excellent. The whole concept of the Society of Cincinatti was rather exclusive, rather like a male version of the Daughters of the... 更多

Having been visited many historical houses around the world, Anderson's is one that leaves grand impression. Not because it is free, or its relation between Cincinnati and the US history, or its art collections like many others, maybe it's more because of the story of the couple, their tastes and philanthropism that remain till today. I was lucky to share... 更多

Housed in a historic mansion, and dedicated headquarters of the Society of the Cincinnati (the oldest patriotic hereditary society in America). I was lucky enough to go on one of the free tours with only one other person on a Wednesday mid day tour. I also had two excellent tour guides/docents: the first was a long time docent, the other... 更多

The Anderson house is a museum with all kinds of artifacts, some from the revolutionary war and others things that the family collected. The house is small enough to easily cover things (unlike many of the massive museums DC has to offer) and the artifact are interesting but there's nothing spectacular so this is probably a place for people who... 更多

I didn't know anything about this attraction, but I'm so happy to have stopped in. Having grown up in MA, I should have known some of the history of Larz and his lovely wife, Izabel. They were quite a pair and the grand house is definitely worth a visit. Our guide was really into his subjects (maybe a tad too... 更多

We were looking for something to do after 3 days of museums...we needed something interesting without being museum-y (lots of reading and some heavy topics). We saw some reviews for this mansion and thought it would be a nice change! It was! The guide was wonderful and very informed. You could tell he loved history and was excited to share... 更多

This is right around the corner from the Woodrow Wilson House, so I decided to visit as I walked by on my way back downtown. The house is very opulent/beautiful and the tour very informative about the couple who built the home, the home and its contents and the Society of Cincinnati who the couple left the home to. An... 更多
