This is a good museum. the zoology section is particularly good. Very well laid out.Some objects are labelled in English as well as Latvian. Nice place to while away a couple of hours.
After some confusion at the start (I was told this was the Natural history museum!), I went through the galleries which were filled with a wealth of information and displays. Well worth a visit. Entrance is through a very old set of wooden doors and after paying a modest admission, you are free to browse through 3 floors of artifacts, costumes, arms and associated written descriptions of the evolution of modern day Latvia.
I loved 2 things about the museums in Riga - they are all proper museums (objects not computers), and all very quiet, at least in April. This museum had all sorts - objects from the Iron Age, a reconstructed Soviet flat, dummies in national costume. Well worth a look
How Latvian honey production became important. Silver coin stashes from the Middle Ages. The origins of textile patterns. A brief colonial effort in Gambia. And more. Welcoming staff. Sadly I had the museum to myself as its current home (whilst the castle is being renovated) is not obvious. However, venturing inside you have a wealth of objects from neolithic times, through culture - models which echo the open-air museum and costumes and jewellry over the ages etc etc - to historical facts that will melt your heart such... 更多
