if you like your national parks with paved access routes then you're in for a disappointment with Whanganui NP. Its a true kiwi wilderness that you either have to hike or paddle your way in and out. Very limited driving opportunities other then the river road which is a must
Hats off to the roadworkers who manage to keep this road open during winter! What a treat it was to drive through this National Park with all its twists, turns, breath-taking scenery and views! Never a dull moment and a feast for the eyes. Hot tip though - make sure the driver keeps his eyes on the road!!
The Whanganui National Park is a vast expanse dominated by the River. We drove from Ohakune along the old river road to Wanganui. What a drive if you take you time and take in the scenery and breathtaking views. Hardly any traffic This road is now suitable for hire cars although some parts require care. There is a lovely coffee... 更多

You need to spend at least 3 days here, get a guided tour if possible if you just want to wander , you can get information on huts in the area where you can stay quite cheep
Whanganui River Road is most likely the most visited attraction in the area, but valleys, small waterfalls, maori 'pa's and other attractions are worth a visit. A nice day to spend a driving day from Whanganui.

This track is mainly through lovely New Zealand bush with plentiful bird life and well appointed huts (4) along the way. While the access to the start point and the transport from the end point... 更多
