This is the main War Memorial in Invercargill (the other one is for the Boar War which is at the other end of Dee street.) There are bench seats around the Cenotaph were you can just have time out to remember the falling! etc,
An impressive monument to the Fallen and strangely peaceful despite being very close to the main road and a busy junction. I try to look at the War memorials in every place I visit, just reading the names brings home the sheer scale of the sacrifices that communities experienced and endured.
As others below mention, a special place to view the monument aspect, and where important observances such as ANZAC, and also a place to reflect on life and think about the sacrifices made by previous generations, many of whom never saw Southland / NZ again after the Great War 1914-18 and subsequent wars.
