Only a 35km drive north of Dunedin you'll find this lovely seaside settlement near the mouth of the Waikouaiti River which was a major fishing village but now more popular as a holiday retreat. Have visited here many times over the years and still enjoy this seaside attraction.
The highlight of a drive between Oamaru to Dunedin was the wonderful secret of Karitane with its gorgeous beach and rocks, overlooked by the historic site of Huriawa on the headland. Incredibly, there was hardly a soul around - this clearly isn't a stop on the well trodden tourist itinerary.
It's well worth walking up to Huriawa as the path...
Right besides the beach is the Huriawa Peninsula, which is also the location of a historic pa. It can be a bit tricky to access and get parking, but it's well worth going to and exploring. Stunning views of the beach and the surrounding coast, and some lovely walk trails. Highly recommended place if you enjoy the beauty of nature,...
Neat beach with expansive views. Can fish off the wharf. A neat village with a mix of permanent and part time residents. Nice area for a walk along the beach. And at the end of your time a shop to buy an ice cream. Railway line not far away.
