We did an evening walking tour guided by Cherie, a volunteer from the Art Deco Trust. Her enthusiasm was matched by her knowledge of the town's architecture. Incidentally, we walked around before the tour and initially felt slightly underwhelmed by the art deco buildings (as another recent reviewer has also said)... BUT the tour showed the town in a completely... 更多
In 1931 an earthquake and consequential fire destroyed the city. The city was rebuilt in the Art Deco style of the time. We had to tender in as the Princess ship took the only shore birth. Easy ride for about 20 minutes and then a special free bus to the heart of the city. We had read a lot in... 更多
If you like Art Deco or just pretty amazing buildings then go on one of the Art Deco walks, through the local society who have really knowledgeable guides to steer around Napier
Whether you want to know more about the art deco architecture in Napier, visitor information, gifts and souvenirs it's a must visit
We visited from our cruise ship and had pre-booked the guided walk. Our guide was knowledgeable and entertaining, providing an informed commentary about the architecture and history of the town and its rebuilding. The movie presentation was also interesting but just reiterated what we'd already heard. No need to do both. As I said, we had pre-booked this and had... 更多
This place is a trust, run by staff and wonderful volunteers. They are dressed in 1930's clothing, and def bend over backwards to make you feel a apart of it all. The shop is amazing, the amount of replicas and originals for sale and for viewingetc, perfect!!! The walking tour, at 2 pm, is the best I think. We not... 更多
I think that the shop and posters and books are impressive. Everyone associated with the tour was helpful and friendly. The tour starts off with a slide show which mainly focuses on the earthquake which resulted in the downtown being planned and rebuilt over a couple of years. I felt that much too much focus was on the earthquake. The... 更多
There was a wonderful film showing some of the earthquake experiences in 1931-2 which preceded the rebuilding of the city in its ART Deco Style. The "Shop"attached to it meant my husband was able to purchase his own piece of art Deco - a straw hat in the style of the period
Napier was destroyed by devastating earthquakes in the 1930s. It slowly restored itself in the ART DECO style of the day. Napier is truly an Art Deco mecca. Now every effort is being made to preserve these historically significant structures. Napier, is a vibrant, charming, and attractive city today because of the foresight of City Leaders of yesterday. And the... 更多
A beautiful shop with many beautiful things to purchase as a memory of our trip to Napier. The lady in the shop was very helpful giving us dates of events in Napier.
tour focused on history and architecture. Leslie our guide was great. Very well informed. We found the tour a bit long and left at the end choosing not to go back for tea/coffee and video. We went to one of the lovely bars identified during the tour for the hot fire and a glass of local wine.
We did the hour long morning tour and wished we had done the 2 hour afternoon tour. Our enthusiastic and very knowledgable guide gave us an insight into the history of Napier and the characteristics of the Art Deco style of architecture. The tour then lead into a 30 minute film about the earthquake in the Art Deco Trust Centre,... 更多
Matching our expectations their walking tour of Art Deco buildings and sights was an information packed two hour pleasure. Humorous and insightful anecdotes and observations meant that time passed too quickly. The guide was incredibly motivated and exceptionally well informed. You do not need to be an Art Deco addict to appreciate this tour.
