This is worth stopping at for a little bit of Cretan ecclesiastical history. The monastery is small with an interesting little museum. The biggest attraction is the remarkably detailed and large icon in the Church, which is deservedly well-known. Some nice icons for sale in the shop, and a small cafe as well.
Deciding to get away from the beach resorts we drove around the Palekastro area up to Bai and Itanos and came back via M.Toplou. We came upon this impressive Church and monastary and whilst we were unable to go in it was quite breath taking. When we return next year we plan to visit again
Moni Toplou is listed in the guide books as a place to visit to look at icons and also to purchase award wining olive oil, honey and wines. The journey by road is picturesque and worthwhile, travelling east from Sitia. We did not see evidence of any monks though they may have been cloistered away working. The front desk was... 更多
We had our stop to this place after Vai beach. Nice, cozy Monastery with a church and a museum - great surprise. Also you can buy some souvenirs here. A monk told a short story about some exhibits. Worth to visit. Amazing cactus in the yard. Parking place on the other side of the road near other church.
The monastery is very small, but it has the specific atmosphere that you expect to find. And there are less visitors than in some other monastries, as west Crete still has less tourists. We expected to be there for half an hour max, but spent a full hour as both the icon as the gravure collection is very nice to... 更多
Although the monastery was closed due to the winter season, we met a priest coming out of the church who invited us in to visit. It is truly beautiful, and the priest explained to us all of the paintings. I would suggest reading up on the monastery before going, made it more interesting for me.
Toplou Monastry, is so a quiet scenic coastal road east of Sitia. The tower can be seen from a distance and is very photogenic. There is a huge car park on the right and a short walk into the grounds of the Monastry. You do not pay, except to go into the actual building housing the museum which of course... 更多
