take time to wander round these atmospheric ruins from the industrial age. The mine buildings give a sense of how the mine would have operated and comprehensive information boards explain each point in full. The mine engine towers over the mine giving a ghost town effect. It was very interesting to walk around and read about how the mine came to be and came to an end. We were in Pomarão the day before, which also has its History connected to this mine. The acid "lake" is an amazing sight, with different colours around the stones.
This village with its abandoned pyrite mines and derelict industrial buildings is an incredible place. We walked around at will...no entry charge, no guides... There were signs in Portuguese and English explaining the sights and history of the place. This would be of huge interest also to geologists and people interested in Industrial history. Visited this place and have met (by luck) an old man (85) who worked there for 35 years... every day for 12 hours...unbelievable... 800 meters deep... about 2300 steps down to earth ... amazing landscape... another planet... another time... visit it and check history... e.g. this town had the first Television installed in Portugall in the past... rich company... rich... 更多
Friendly village with simple architecture but with a place with a remarkable mining history. There are some museums centers that seek to recreate and value the importance of the mine in the town. But it´s the rubble remained of the mine that surprises us. The site is well signposted but deserves another tourist use because of the historic importance that... 更多
