We parked our cars in the Spar car park and walked through the woods to the Mill. It took around 30 minutes and it was very muddy but all eight of us enjoyed the fresh air! We had a short tour, the shop is tiny. The owner conducted our short tour and very modestly explained how he has provided tartans... 更多
The gentleman giving the tour was very nice and informative. It was cool getting to see all of the old equipment still working. The entire experience was great. It was like a step back in time.
Nice place in a beautiful setting with a lot of history and very nice products. To be honest we couldn't figure out how many of the products are actually still manufactured on site but we enjoyed our visit and the owners friendliness in showing us around. If on Islay don't miss it.
My golfing buddy and I visited the Old Woolen Mill in August 2016. This is a remarkable facility that everyone should visit not just because of the history but also because of the fascinating and ancient technology on display. The woolen mill is a sturdy stone building on the banks of a fast-moving stream which had, hundreds of years ago,... 更多
Quite an interesting place to visit. We stopped in for a quick look-around, and ended up spending a good hour there. They have some very nice woolen products. While not cheap, you can't fault the quality, not every woolen mill does work for the royal family, movies, and Savile Row tailors. Nicely understated as well, unlike Harris Tweed. We had... 更多
The owner offers a short tour of the mill, which is free of charge. This is one of the last of the woolen mills doing things in really the old fashioned way, with original equipment. The tour is mostly a recap of the owners career and film and royal projects that he worked on. If you're a buff of antique... 更多
Have visited many times but not for some years. Delighted to see little if anything has changed. The Mill is personified by its working equipment which when fired up makes the most wonderful noise... A joy to behold Plenty of produce for sale, with beautiful tweeds suits, jackets and hats A must visit for all Islay visitors
A family run business using traditional weaving methods and selling top quality goods. If you can talk to the owner as his life is worth listening to and worth a visit in its own right.
We are big believers in never passing an intriguing road-side sign without following it to see where it leads. Passing the sign for Islay Woollen Mill, therefore, we had to investigate, and what a rare treat! This is a working woollen mill, making tweed and other woollen fabrics. The current mill was built in 1883, but weaving has been taking... 更多
Islay is a lovely island but your time may well be dominated by whisky. Take a little time to step outside that and go see this mill, a revived 1930s establishment run by a quirky transplanted Yorkshireman for the last forty or so years making bespoke tweeds for movies such as Braveheart and more . The products are stunning and... 更多
