For a small town like Bamberg this is a really interesting museum, well worth a couple of hours of your time. It's located in the Alte Hofhaltung, next to the cathedral.
There are four permanent exhibitions:
- the development of Bamberg and its relationship with the Regnitz river - lots of maps;
- 19th century portraits and applied art, supposedly...
The museum, which is in a restored historical building (including former stables)! has an excellently curated and presented exhibition on "Jewish Bamberg", with photographs, artefacts and much documentation, obviously the result of excellent research. The city of Bamberg and the Director of the Museum are to be congratulated on a magnificent job!
If you have a thing for maps, this museum is for you. Just as you enter there is as room featuring masps and how the river has changed over time. Other parts of the museum include an overhyped picture gallery which is light on Cranach and Pietet Breugel. There are some translations in English, but not many. A down side...
