Across the large shallow lagoon from the last remaining saltpans lies the intriguing island of Mozia. Once the home of Englishman Joseph Whitaker of the Marsala wine dynasty who started the archaeological digs in late in the 19th Century. Many of the finds are to be seen in the Whitaker museum housed in his old home. tHE ISLE IS FLAT... 更多

The scale of the ruins and excavations is surprising for a place that is 1/4 square miles. Dates to 17 C BC. Indigenous, Greek, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and others. Excavated by Whittacker in the earl 1900's and continued by his daughter. A Greek original statue found on the island. Charioteer. Full size. Good museum. Worth a couple of hours to see... 更多

From the starting pier you have a creeping perception of some sorcery. You board the boat and slowly are teletransported ti another time. Mozia is sort of a parallel world. An island-city of phenicean ages, with conserved premises, ruins, the port and a museum to visit. You walk over the ehole extension end almost feel the life that used to... 更多

Mozia is a small island, a 3-minute ferry ride from Sicily/Marsala, and worth going a bit out of your way to see. The island is full of small (and larger) archaeological sites, and a recent effort by the University of Rome La Sapienza has added a ton of explanatory placards (in English and Italian) to help explain what you are... 更多

We didn't save enough time to look at this whole island and all the ruins, or we were just too tired to stay until the next boat, but other than seeing the Giovinetto which was spectacular, and the main building full of ruins, we didn't see much more. There is a lot to see on this island. We went late... 更多

take a cab, drive a car, or even walk.....just get yourself to the boat to take you to this wonderful little island that is full of ruins and a small but lovely museum. This is probably one of the best ways to spend two -three hours that you will ever have!

This is clearly a very important archaelogical site, but, though the short boat trip to the 'island' was fun, the ruins were less than inspiring. (This is based on having explored several other sites in Sicily on this visit and a previous one.) The artefacts in the museum are only labelled in Italian (when most of the visitors were French... 更多

Unfortunately we allowed too little time on the island to do it justice. We managed to walk around only about a quarter of the coastline and had to skip the last room in the museum. The museum has a lovely marble statue and many artifacts. There are Roman ruins with mosaic flooring too. Allow several hours. The ferry boat ride... 更多

Enjoyed a bite at a cafe beside the salt flats before taking a 10 minute ferry to the small island of Mozia. The centerpiece of the archeological museum on the island is a prized statue, the Youth of Mozia (aka The Mozia Charioteer), which is of Sicilan/Greek origin ca. 470–460 B.C. Phoenician, Etruscan, Greek and Roman artifacts are displayed as... 更多
