This was easter time and all the churches were packed with people and practices for the procession of the Madonna and Christ. It was very impressive as the people were dressed in many different costumes . they were followed by band and the faithful.
This Basilica is right next to the B&B I stayed at. It was open after noon, so it was my first stop on my walking tour of Lecce. Very impressive and something you should make sure you visit.
Not like today's churches. This church is the height of Baroque in the middle of Lecce, with dodos, cherubs, sheep and other beasts hanging off the outside. it's one of the masterpieces of Giuseppe Zimbalo, who spent his life making of the wonderful buildings that make Lecce well worth a visit.
A large and impressive building with the most incredible alter. Having seen this on Italy unpacked it was lovely to be able to go and set it in person. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and it certainly helps having someone with you who knows the area and the information about the buildings.
The exterior is a visual marvel with dozens of carvings - one might call it fussy or busy - but it certainly has an impact on the eyes. Sadly, I found the interior rather bland in comparison and no where near as interesting as other churches in the city. Worth a visit just for the exterior.
You can gaze at the exterior statues for a long while and continue to discover new details you missed. This church is not to be missed, beautiful.
