In this square, which has a huge cooling fountain than can spray water anywhere but which is welcomed in the warmer weather, there is a large memorial designed and built and paid for by the Russians during their occupation of Vienna after the second world war. The Viennese, however, agreed to maintain it - which they have !
Stop by for a bit of cooling spray from the fountains. Passed by here each day on the way to our apartment and it was never crowded, just a few people relaxing here and there.
A nice, quiet place to chill out. The Soviet war memorial is also here, so two attractions in one place.
Happened to come across it while passing though the area.
Glad we made a stop. It was strange to find such a prominent Soviet monument in Vienna.
When one reads about the history of Austria post WW-2, the Soviet occupation and the treaties thereafter; then the context and importance of this monument is appreciated.
The place is clean and well...
I was shocked to see a Soviet Monument in the middle of Vienna. I got well acquainted with a past with the Soviets between Austria and the Soviets. This was a very beautiful monument. At night the fountain shines with a vibrant color display.
