The mosaic pavements in the Domvs Romana at Rabat rank among the finest and oldest mosaic compositions from the western Mediterranean, alongside those of Pompeii and Sicily. They were discovered in 1881 just outside Mdina in the remains of a rich and sumptuously decorated town house of the Roman period. This museum was one of the very first to be opened to the public in Malta. The small museum of the Domvs Romana is built around the remains of a rich, aristocratic roman town house (domvs) which was accidentally discovered in 1881. Although very little remains from the house itself, the intricate mosaics which survived for centuries, as well as the artefacts found within the remains, are testimony of the original richness and story of this fantastic abode. The current Museum building does not only preserve some of the most precious Roman remains but also provides a glimpse into the lives of a Roman domestic household, from the actual division of roles in a Roman family, to fashion, education, entertainment, food and drink.

The only surviving Roman house on Malta, the Domus Romana is small but its relatively few contents are so well displayed and made so accessible for visitors. The floor mosaics are good, with an extraordinary 3-D effect on one. The statues are from the early Roman period, when quality was at its height with the most wonderful carving of folds... 更多

This small Roman villa is worth visiting as it is fairly well-preserved. The floor mosaics are of course part of the draw, or the main part.

This is a small museum with some nice mosaics and some Roman items. Only good value as we got tickets as part of a deal, with 3 other attractions. What we saw was interesting, but don't expect to stay very long.

but a bit underwhelming if you're looking for something spectacular. While it's a unique example of roman mosaic floor, and will offer a huge amount to anyone interested in history, at the end of the day it's a few floors with some statues and an attached museum. I loved it, but I could imagine it not suiting everyone

Enjoyed the walk through the Roman Villa. Lots of information well presented. Display of artifacts good but some lights were switched off! Impressive mosaic floors. The public toilet area needs a thorough renovation, feels like something from medieval times (very bad stench...health authorities should take a look at it!)

We bought a combined ticket at this site which enabled us access to here, National Museum of Natural History, St Paul's Catacombs and the Sightseeing Train Tour. A very reasonable €9 for seniors. It is small so won't take more than 30 mins. We looked round while waiting for the train ride which runs on the hour. Some interesting pieces... 更多

It's a Roman villa. The highlight is a room with a large mosaic on the floor. There are also statues and displays about the Roman era in Malta.

It was a time jump into Ancient Rome, in a house (domus) of a nobleman (patrician) or a wealthy merchant of the period. The restored pieces of mosaic are amazing, full of colors and giving hints of an extraordinary production technique. Plan around one hour for the visit. The location is the big plaza in front of the Citadel.

There are lots of historically important places to be found on Malta, from neolithic times to the WW2. This Roman house gives a very interesting and informative insight in how life on Malta was back in Roman times. Of course, no comparison to Pompey or Rome itself, but very good insight for the extensive overview of people living on Malta... 更多
