This is one of the highlights of Tessaloniki . Once inside even though it is an empty structure from the remaining mosaics and frescos you are witness of the struggles over the ages of different religions and different cultures . Somehow I wished that here , and not inside this structure but very close by on the grounds , was... 更多
Even just walking around the outside one can appreciate just how beautifully this building has been designed, detailed and constructed. Again.....just keep walking....so much to see.
Scale and continuity define this magnificent structure. It might not be so pretty from the outside but you will be impressed by the unforgettable space created inside. You are keenly aware that this has been a sacred place ( temple, church, mosque and church again) continuously in use for almost two thousand years! Its crowning glory is the dazzling array... 更多
This one is absolutely worth a visit. Not that you need to spend a lot of time, but you should definitely take a step inside. I was amazed when entering, because it felt like it was larger on the inside than the outside! The entrance fee is reasonable (2 Euros) and you need approximately 20 minutes.
Surrounding area is a little off-putting but you experience a definite 'wow' factor when you enter. Take time to study the amazing Byzantine mosaics within the dome and side-alcoves. A quite remarkable building with multi-layers of history to wonder about. Needs time and space, and possibly a guide, to appreciate best, although there is a good video explaining the mosaics.

Of, and Herman Melville stopped in on his grand tour! I learned this with... 更多
Right in the center of Thessaloniki, easy to find, just off Egnatia street, very close to ''Kamara'', the Arch of Galerious, which is another highlight of the city! After years of restoration it is open to public, worth the visit as it is an impressive structure, though not much to see inside but you can feel the glory of its past....
I'm not religious in any way but this place has something that gets to you in a spiritual way. So much so that we visited twice in the week we were in the city. It's a huge building with very little in it and the ceilings are amazing. And that's about it. But choose your visiting time carefully, when there... 更多
It has been recently re-opened after 20 years of being closed due to the repairs that were taking place. It's perfect for a short visit if you are just passing by. Once inside you can admire its size and the little decoration that is left gives an idea of how magnificent it must have been in its full splendour. Access... 更多
