This church has a great history. Briefly: it was damaged in earthquakes, rebuilt and burned out by a fire in 1959. So this great building like a phoenix. Its stone walls impressed me for life! See it! It is worth to visit!
My wife wanted to see this church with its history and stories of being rebuilt twice. The structure is amazing as the outside does not reveal the inside. The columns still show the wear and tear of the 1755 earthquake. When we enter their was a mass in progress so we waited until it finished than toured the church. Just... 更多
Interior of the church is amazing! If I would have to choose, this would be my favorite one. Sad story behind it. Fire destroyed the walls, many murders inside and outside. That is why the new roof is in red color. Better to go and look on your own.
You do not know what is behind the doors. Ravaged by fire the church was re-roofed, but the interior was left as it was after the fire. Several altars have been re-installed but the burned out columns are strange.
On our first day to Lisbon, we saw this building, took photos and went on our way....never going inside. At the end of our trip, curiosity got to us and we walked inside. It's stunning! There's no cost, so please take the time to check it out. A true depiction of another era.
The place was hit hard by a fire, which made the entire original roof collapse. Now the roof is completly different from the charred columns, giving the whole place a diferent, but interesting, look.
Again we visited this church, which for us is obligatory when we visit Lisbon. Although it isn't in a good shape, we still find it a peaceful place and the charm it has makes it a special place.
We coincidently found this little churche and read the tragic story of August 13th 1959 when it burned to the ground. But despite the tragedy, the walls and columns held and stood still.
If you are walking walk in the Baixa , feel free to take a little detour on the side of the Igreja São Domingos. Destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, devastating by the fire in 1959. The fire completely ravaged the interior of the church and with it the furniture, gilded altars, magnificent paintings and other relics of the past. Evening,... 更多
