描述:

The Duke of Cadaval Palace Church, called Saint John the Evangelist, is...

The Duke of Cadaval Palace Church, called Saint John the Evangelist, is considerd to be one of the most beautifull private churches in Portugal. The Saint John the Evangelist Church was founded in 1485. You enter by a Gothic porch of the fifteenth century along with a tombstone-shaped canopy, with the inscription of its foundation and with the coat of arms of its founder, D. Rodrigo de Melo, 1st Earl of Olivenza. The nave has Gothic ribs and is covered with abeautiful and excepcional collection of tiles, by the painter Antonio de Oliveira, dated 1711 and signed by the author. On the floor of the church can see the tombs of the Dukes of Cadaval and their ancestors. At the center of the church you can admire two of the many curiosities of this church, a crypt with the bones of the monks of the convent of Lóios and an Arabic cistern - the church was built on the ruins of an Arab castle, destroyed during the riots in favor of the Master Avis in 1384. The wall of nave has a tribune of the seventeenth century, beautiful example of architecture of this century, built by the 1st Duke of Cadaval, Dom Nuno Alvares Pereira de Melo. The spectacular main altar is in the Mannerist style, transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque. The images represent St. John the Evangelist. The walls are covered with polychrome tiles of the seventeenth century. The Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament has a golden altar of the eighteenth century with a renaissance of the sixteenth century tomb, belonging to Don Francisco de Melo, adviser to John III. The construction of this tomb is attributed to the French architect Nicholas Chanterene. On the other wall of this chapel is the tomb of Manuel de Melo, Governor of Tanger.

The woodwork is beautiful, but the tile azulejos work is just amazing. Simple, yet elegant and wonderfully ordained. Your 6 euro ticket also gets you into the museum which is also very interesting.

A lovely church that was well worth our time. Has a interesting historical background and picture taking was allowed. Our friends returned to climb to the tower and really enjoyed the views that could be seen from above.

Visited Evora with family last week - it was very interesting and this city is one of the oldest in Portugal ! The little Igreja de Sao Joao Evangelista inside the Palacio dos Duques de Cadaval is a private property and is well kept. Worth a visit !

Private church of a ducal family. I'm not a tile person but even I had to note the beauty of the tile work here. Interesting tombs and altar. I liked it a lot especially when taken in conjunction with the ducal palace next door. Interesting features inside the church that I detailed in my review of the palace.

This is an outstanding example of azulejos and a must-see if you are at all interested in the art & architecture of Portugal. Photos are allowed.

We bought a joint ticket with the adjacent palace, but I'm not sure that either of them were worth the price. The tiles are impressive in their own way, but there's so many of them that they become rather overwhelming. There are two things beneath the floor to look at - one the bones of a monk (seems to be... 更多

Title says it all. Tiles on the wall were beautiful, and the bones underneath were cool, but not much else besides. The palace didn't impress me much either. It had a few interesting points, but I wasn't terribly excited by anything I saw. I'd say see the chapel only, and go sit in the shaded courtyard.

The church is well worth a visit for the tiles alone and I enjoyed it much more than the cathedral - although a trip up the cathedral tower is a must! I wouldn't bother with the package that includes the Palace rooms. Rather pedestrian displays of not very much really, but do go to see the tiles in this church!

I'd never heard of this place before I got to Evora, but we were told we should go there by our hotel staff. They were right - it's not big, but if you're into Portuguese tiles (which I am), you really should have a look. Well worth the visit.
