Whilst the inside of the church is as one would expect, the building is actually a Roman temple from around 1500 years ago. That in itself is amazing, but if you go to the museum and walk under the streets you will be at the level of the Roman forum and see the original entrance and steps to the temple... 更多
It's amazing to think this building has been standing here for well over 1500 years! Once the Temple to the Roman goddess Minerva and now a beautiful Church in the middle of Assisi. Well worth a visit for the peace and quiet!
Assisi was established before Roman times but flourished during their dominion as evidenced by this lovely temple. To really appreciate its history you can enter a well -documented underground tunnel further down the street that goes to the San Francesco Basilica from the central piazza and enter the Roman piazza. You can see that the stairs leading up to the... 更多
This is a wonderful example of a cathedral that has been transformed from a temple. It is located in the middle of the city so lots of activity nearby.
The outside of this church is certainly different than what you will find once inside. The exterior of what used to be the Temple of Minerva, is a Roman structure with several extremely large pillars that almost hide the entrance within. Once inside is a lovely church very brightly painted, mainly blue with beautiful frescoes on the walls and ceiling.... 更多
When you look at the front you think of a old Roman Temple with the impressive pillars. Street singers out in front and restaurants on the piazza make an interesting setting. When inside you see an old cathedral built over older ruins. Different from others still pretty with unusual blue tint. In the back there is the organ.
The basilica has an impressive pillars at the entrance so you cant miss it..and inside is very beautiful with blue color background...very peaceful inside and worth the visit...and offer prayers..
From the ancient temple only the facade remains. Not as impressive as the ones you see in Rome, but still beautiful. Inside you'll find a rather mediocre interior, dedicated to BMV. When you step inside, don't forget to turn around and take a close look at the organ.
Small church, but disappointing compared to the other churches in Assisi. If you have little time, I would skip this one.
...Gothic church in Rome, and there is a Michelangelo that is frequently overlooked by visitors. Seeing any Michelangelo is worth a trip, and this church is right next to my favorite monument, the Pantheon.
