Built in the early 1800's, was in use until the early 1900's. Looks like aqueducts built by the Romans probably because the system worked.
very intrestin if you like to WALK and see how lucca got its water years ago its amazing that its still standing very pretty on a nice day you get to se parts of Lucca you would never see
Ancient Acqueduc, you can see it from faraway from the highway, construction from the ancien romans to bring the water in town of Lucca; locals make often a picnic trip to the forest outside of town, very nice for familys.
The distance to the hills is about 4km. On the way you'll pass by a few water fountains that will allow you to taste the hills yonder, that water travels underground, the aqueduct is no longer in use. We only saw a portion of the aquaduct from the bus on our trip through the countryside. Would have missed it if the guide hadn't told us where to look. It is very old and well constructed - didn't know there were so many in the world.
I came across the aquaduct while planning my trip to Lucca. IThe article I read did explain that it wasnt easy to find unless you know where to look. This is arguably the best thing to see in Lucca and even the tourist office know nothing about it! I recommend you plan a walk along the aqueduct and up into the hills following the route of the river which feeds it.
