Let me start by saying that the 3 stars are not a reflection of the theatre itself but a judgement on the stay it is kept in. The ruins of this Roman piece of glorious architecture, are left in a despicable state. For the wondering Indiana jones thou it is still amazing to walk through the lava ruins of what... 更多
Right in the middle of Catania and well worth a visit. Well presented and some lovely sculptures and pieces of ancient statues displayed separately.
Located on Piazza Stesicoro, there is only a small portion of the amphitheatre visible as most of it is buried beneath the city. It was entirely buried after the 1693 earthquake, until excavations began in 1904 and finished in 1906. Right in the centre of the city, the amphitheatre cut out of lava rock, showing the public terraces, and exposed and covered cellars for the gladiators. You are free to wander around at will and explore this truly historic remains.

Obviously they will not be able to display more due to its huge size... 更多
The entrance to the site is quite interesting, as it looks like it's inside a building, although there is a sign of Roman Theater on the building. We only found the site based on the picture of the building on the web, otherwise we would have missed it. We were expecting something like an open-air theater. It's open air, but... 更多
