This special railway or Funicolare is really useful. It helps you to “climb” up without any problem for a small fee. You will have enough possibility to walk to the church and down later. This is a short trip up the hill but a convenient way to visit the upper parts of Bergamo. There is not a lot to see on the way up or down and it is usually fairly busy but interesting and the architecture is definitely worth while. .
Oh my what an experience for kids in one of the most beautiful towns for culinary moms and dads... but for kids hell until you go up to the mountain in the funnycolor as they called it...once at the top.... well a beautiful view over a slightly still warm Bergamo... for dads... Monza is only 0-60 away!!!
Using this funicular adds to the experience of travelling to the top of the city. It is part of the ticket you can buy for 3 days which is great value . It doesn't run at lunch time and you have to calculate when you coming down but there are buses anyway .
It goes quite often, can be crowded in the middle of the day, but still it's a great idea to use it at least once when in Bergamo. If you buy a public transport ticket (we got a 72-hour one), you can use both funiculars.
Joining both the old and new town the funicular is quaint way to travel. To reduce walking you can catch a bus, also operated by ATB, but getting to know Bergamo on foot is definitely recommended. Nice ride up a very steep hill,not expensive at all.The old city is a great place to stroll and take in the sights and grab lunch.We found the best views were on the walk down the roads go through some old city gates(portas) and it is quite pleasant.
