Actually it is in this church where for the first time type of music known as Gregorian chant was invented giving the birth to modern Western music. It is also one of the oldest buildings in Metz.
This site is on the Michelin walking tour of Metz. The guide book states that the site is open daily except Mondays from 2 to 6. To ad it was closed the day we were there, but the grounds were lovely for a stroll towards the river and Cathedral.

If you're coming from the arsenal/citadel, you might miss this nugget whose foundations date back to the fourth century. While the inside might be interesting if you catch it open, the true magic is in its surroundings, going down the hill to the mother's monument (you'll know when you get there). Neat, but only open to go in on weekends. Otherwise you can just walk around it. Surrounding gardens (Esplanade) are great, so you kill two birds with one stone by visiting it.
