Wow what a drive! Typical narrow roads like you see everywhere in Ireland, but the views are spectacular! You should only enter the tunnels one car at a time, not very wide to say the least. Be sure to turn off and take in the views.

Just make sure you are not going clockwise on this part of the road between 2pm & 3pm that's when the coaches come through while they go anti clockwise. It only just big enough for them to get through and any other vehicle coming the opposite way has problems.
The scenery along the road is unforgettable and changes with each bend. There is so much to see that this should not be missed. I also had fun driving the windy road although you need to be careful of the tour buses.
At times challenging with how narrow and winding it is, this road is well worth the drive. It is beautiful and has a lot of places you can pull off to take in the views of the national park.
I agree with Klaas d. If you were planning on driving the Old Kenmare road - forget it. I think most of the reviews here are referring to the N71 - the road from Kilkenny to Kenmare and on to Bantry and Skibbereen. The N71 is a beautiful drive for everyone except the driver. What a way to see the lakes of killarney, the old kenmare winds its way through the National Park, with narrow little roads and wonderful flowers and plants for all to see, a truly wonderful drive.
