We were staying in Coniston and just had to walk up the old man which dominates the skyline. We had just had the full force of storm Abigail and her aftermath, so when the weather forecast said it would be a reasonable day we just went for it. We started from Coniston and to be honest it was much harder... 更多
We walked the old man on 14/11/15 which must have been the wettest weekend this year. The walk was great regardless of the rain and wind. I will be returning next year to walk it in better conditions to see the great views we missed.
The day was windy to begin with and a little overcast. After doing the right things of telling people where I was going and making sure I was well equipped, I set off via the route that runs around the vase of the fell, up to Goat Tarn, and then up to a ridgeline which leads towards the summit. If you want an interesting challenge, avoid the main tourist route up. Not recommended to walk up in high winds though.
Not technically challenging however takes some endurance. Plenty of places to take a break on the way up with beautiful views of the old mine and Coniston. Once at the top, views are breathtaking with good visibility its able to see lake windemere, the whole of Coniston, scaffels pike, swirl how, bowness, Ambleside and so much more. Definitely recommend!
It is great for kids but for elders it might be a bit of a trek. The walk takes about 2-3 hours. The summit has beautiful views and is lovely to sit down after a tiring walk and eat sandwiches with the fellow walkers. Its safe for dogs too! Walking down is a bit hard if you have weak knees... 更多
Basically a pile of stones on a hill. Quite a hike up the hill..the views were breathtaking..we had no breath left a bit disappointing on a misty morn:(
I have done this occasionally over the years its a great view from the top I think you need to be fit for this. I always approach from the rear and descend the Coniston face down the tourist path
Great day out, weather was amazing with views right across Morecambe Bay and to the Scottish Coast. Walked up from Coniston west via Walna Scar Rd, past Blind Tarn, Goats Water before going up the Old Man, was quite a gentle climb with a few bits to raise the heart rate, but worth it at once at the top, with... 更多
