They have done a great deal of work in recent years to restore this beautiful, modest and impressive cathedral. Its intricate cobbled and tiled floors and its superb mosaics are tranquil and ancient - the golden mosaics probably pre-date the arrival of William the Conqueror in Britain. It is not always easy to get to but you will leave with... 更多
Fully recommend to go there! You should have time enough to explore not only this extraordinary place with memorable mosaics, but also neighbouring museum and chapel.
I guess I was lucky. It was off season, and the ferry was right there, about to leave to Torcello, which is just at the other side of the waterway, within sight. So close. In no time at all, we were there at the dock, and I was making my way on the long, paved path to Piazza Torcello. Once... 更多
If you only do one thing in Venice, go to Torcello and spend an hour gazing at the magnificent moasiac of the Last Judgement on the west wall of the basilica di Santa Maria Assunta. There are two other marvellous mosaics as well. he main picture shows the adjoining church of Santa Fosca, which is worth a visit, but only... 更多
These were worth the trip to the island of Torcello - thoroughly explained by the audio guide which was provided with our ticket , the mosaics were a close second to the ones in St Marks and quieter! We had ample time to explore the church at leisure - if there is time to spare to visit a third island... 更多
Fabulous afternoon spent in the Basilica and museum. It is very old and historic building and well worth the visit. It was the least populated part of Venice and refreshing to alone. This added to the building as you could sense the history.
This is the place to visit to see some of the earliest mosaics in the Venetian lagoon. If you haven’t seen the mosaics in Ravenna this is a good place to see mosaic work. The basilica is a great example of Venetian /Byzantine architecture. Just look around - the whole place is amazing. We bought audio guides but the commentary... 更多
The church is very interesting and the Last Judgement mosaic that covers the entire rear wall of the church is spectacular. It's a great shame that, for no apparent reason, they don't allow photos.
We went to Torcello because of the reviews for this basilica, which are fully justified. The mosaics which all tell a biblical story are amazing. However the unexpected bonus is the island itself, it is a beautiful haven of tranquility and a welcome break from the manic crush of Venice. Do it!!!
