This was a really terrific experience...we started off in a conference room watching a video (strangely not about the facility or even the Southern hemisphere!) whilst our guide set up the two telescopes outside in an enclosed area for our tour. The guide was very knowledgeable and gave lots of info about planets, various stars and "shadows" which turned out... 更多
They tour kicks off at the visitor cente where a knowledgeable guide walked us through the basics of celestial observations and the different technologies employed. a short but informative video showing scale from 1m resolution to galactic resolution put things into perspective quickly! two telescopes visited, with the crowning jewel and end of tour visit to the SALT telescope itself,... 更多
We visited two telescopes, different in technology and in size. The SALT telescope is interesting and you get to see and understand the complexity of the 92 mirrors, which have to be kept clean at all time. It is obviously better at night if you want to see the star system.
The day tour was worthwhile, although the tour guide's knowledge was lacking once we scratched beneath the surface. The evening tour was extremely poor, with an unnecessary DVD played at start off followed by a perfunctory tour of a few objects in the night sky. Definitely less enthusiasm showed than Jurg, who we visited the evening before.
We unfortunately could not do a tour as they were fully booked but enjoyed the interactive walk through section they had.
We took a day tour as well as a night tour. Both were interesting in their own way. The day tour involves a tour of SALT. The night tour involves looking through telescopes (NOT SALT as that is used by scientists at night) at the night sky. Take a jacket - it is freezing no matter how warm the day... 更多
In the Sutherland area, the SALT and SAAC visitor centre is a must visit. Prebook to ensure availability of a tour. The tour was informative with enough time for taking photographs, and the guide entertaining. Souvenir photographs may be taken at the visitors centre, and proved great fun.
We booked ahead of time for both the afternoon and evening tours. These turned out to be completely different experiences. The afternoon tour starts with a guided tour of the museum giving a general understanding of telescopes and astronomy. After which you drive up to the top where SALT and all the other telescopes (owned and managed by many nations)... 更多
