I'll reiterate the call for bug spray on this visit (though you need it on all of the island). The stairs were a great way to go up, but I wouldn't do it in flip-flops. The "back way" as others note, is easier. You get a great view of the island and seeing the Hermitage was really neat.
Awesome little hike! We had our 6 yr old granddaughter with us and it was the perfect short hike for her! She went up the hard way climbing the stone steps and came down the easy way! Beautiful views! So much history! We wore our water shoes and my husband wore flip flops. Definitely use some bug spray first!
