The Francis bay trail was a little different than most trails on the island since it went around a pond. There is a lookout at one point of the trail where you can see both the pond and Francis bay. Part of the trail is a boardwalk with views into the pond.
The physical location is stunning, and if you are not around when the bugs come out (often around 4:00 p.m.), it is well worth the visit. But Francis is one of the more "buggy" beaches on St. John, so come prepared with repellant! Nature at its' fullest!
Good spot for birding in St. John. We arrived early and saw some ducks and egrets in the pond. Look for the little crabs on the ground along the boardwalk. Be careful along the boardwalk because it can get slippery.
this visit was a great turtle day. We saw over 5 turtles, small and large, but just eating around. I have been to this beach many times, but this year, it was not too crowded, and it was really nice
Wow, what a great find this one was. This was a great beach for us, we spent the whole day there. Plenty of shade, great snorkeling on the far right-hand side near the rocks, and plenty of room to spread out. We saw 7 different sea turtles, a squid and a sting ray here. Not a difficult "hiking trail" but more of a nature trail. Half a mile long and passes through the ruins of the Francis Bay Estate House, then leads to the beach. We hiked this short trail after visiting Francis bay. The bay is more protected than the rest of the North shore so it can be better snorkeling if the water is choppy elsewhere. The trail passes the remains of a nice historic building and also passes a salt pond where you can bird watch. It ends back at the road... 更多
