Very small place. We happened upon it accidentally when the door was open during the day. Like a mini museum. A one room museum. With a scale. LOL
take a few minutes out of your day to learn about the place you are visiting. I never knew the Island was so rich with history. This was the place to be back in the day. I never knew the connection between St Croix and President Hamilton. Very informative and very quick self guided tour. Make it a point to... 更多
As with so many historical sites on St. Croix, there is no funding to provide a person to tell you the history. It is left to storyboards and pictures.
Worth looking at if you're already visiting the Fort but on its own it wouldn't make my list. It's really just a single room outside the fort where they have a few things about Alexander Hamilton and how they did trade back then.
The volunteers staffing the site are very helpful with local information. They have brochures available for the National Park sites on the island.
It is part of the islands story. Up to the 2012 shutdown of the Havens refinery which resulted in the loss of many jobs, so that some people have returned to subsistence agriculture. This island is an amazing place with really deep and heavy history.
Visited the Scale House in conjunction with the Fort. Reading the explanations on how the cane got brought in and measured and the strength of the people doing the work is amazing and sobering when taking into according that the workers didn't have a choice. A living piece of history. Worth the time to go and visit.
This small building was used in years past as a scale house and is now a small museum and gift shop. The clerks are friendly and helpful, and the items are interesting.
