The park staff that we met here was quite helpful in introducing us to the park and giving us recommendations of where to go. There is a small gift store as well as the first of the amazing views along the Skyline.
We entered the Skyline Drive from the town of Front Royal and our first stop at Dickey Ridge. It was a good pit stop to stretch our legs and restroom break. The first glimpse of Shenandoah Valley could be seen from here and it was beautiful in autumn.
If you are entering the park from the north I would suggest that you stop here. They have good info on the park here. The rangers are helpful and glad to answer your questions. They helped us choose which hike we should try. They have some educational displays. They also have good restrooms.
Very Nice Visitor Center along the way. They have food, drinks and plenty of things to remember the beautiful trip along the way. Picked up some fresh blueberry jam, a shirt, hat and a couple stickers.
Before starting to hike get water and a map from the ranger. Two easy but rewarding hikes from this point are the Dickey Ridge Trail and the Snead Farm Trail. Both are easy yet provide a interesting hike with great views. Delightful in the fall.
The Rangers are so nice, and helpful. I LOVE watching the CCC Boys film and the Gift. Watching these are a must when visiting Shenandoah National Park. The gift shop has nice items, and the view of Big Meadows is so pretty from its picture windows.
lots of souvenirs and trinkets for sale. uniformed rangers at the till... they could be better utilized outside talking to the visitors and explaining the park. that interaction was certainly lacking...
