We just returned from Kings Canyon and were amazed with the destruction left by the Rough Fire from last summer and fall. We entered the 180 past Hume Lake the day that it opened and found Boyden Cavern as well as the souvenir shop closed due to damage from the fire.
Boyden Cavern lies beneath the massive 2,000 foot high marble walls of the famous Kings Gates. It is a small cavern but with many varieties of natural speleothems, including rare "shield" formations. Although the hike to the cave entrance is especially steep and very strenuous, it was short and is compensated with spectacular beauty above ground, the Kings River, the... 更多
I liked Boyden Cavern better than Crystal Cave. It was easier to get to, the formations were beautiful and the tour was interesting and to the point. We were even given the option to take an "adventure tour" on the way out, going through some very narrow openings.
Boyden Cave was the very first cave I visited when I was in grade school. This is the cave that got me hooked. I returned after 35 years and still remember the features that enamored me back then. Since then, I have seen about a dozen caves and Boyden is one of the more basic ones. However, I had to... 更多
The cave itself is nothing special, price is about $45 for 2 adults and 2 kids. Staff is quite friendly, but has no geological or speleological knowledge whatsoever. The tour is more like an "hate are some cool facts about this cavern" then a decent explanation of why it formed, what minerals are in it, etc.... I personally felt like... 更多
The tour guide (and his "mini-me" helper) were very friendly and informative. The path up to the cave entrance is fairly steep, but not too long. My preschool aged granddaughter was able to walk up it. The cavern itself is not huge, but it is a nicely preserved cave with some interesting features. Unlike some other caves, photography is allowed,... 更多
By Dead I mean there is no more water running through it or small pools so its not forming anymore. So its a dry cave. But being a caver I enjoy all caves. There are several rooms with beautiful formations 50,000 yrs old. Its paved inside and you go out the same way you came in but the tour guide... 更多
We had visited the other cave in Sequoia Park, Crystal Cavern, and found it interesting. But Boyden was a disappointment. It is small and has few interesting features, and the paths through are difficult to navigate. Plus getting up to the entrance is a challenge. You are told it is a 10 minute uphill walk but not until you reach... 更多
