PS: Not sure why Fantastic Lava Beds is title of this attraction; It should be rightly be titled Cinder Cone. I do not think many people would travel to this remote area (the last 6 miles of which is unpaved) to see the "Fantastic" Lava Beds. "Fantastic" lava beds run all the way the parking lot edge, but the best... 更多
I thought this was pretty awesome. We bought torches for all our kids and we spent and hour wondering across and back. It is really interesting and out kids found the whole experience thrilling. It is a short walk from the car park, but there are a few staircases that would be difficult to navigate unless fully able.
This is on the way to the cinder cone hike. Very flat and easy to get to these huge chunks of hardened lava that spewed from the cinder cone volcano so long ago. They lead back to the lake too so you can see them from the parking area.
We visited the Cinder Cone dormant volcano at Fantastic Lava Beds. It's a about a 7 mile dirt road to the beginning of the 4 mile round trip hike. Our honda minivan made it just fine. Unfortunately, we didn't make it to the top of the volcano but even just at 1 mile in, you get to see the amazing... 更多
The Butte Lake Area of Lassen is remote, but still interesting. It's about 6 miles off Highway 44. Unpaved, but more manageable than some of the other unpaved roads in the park. There is a campground and a day use area near the lake which like Juniper Lake, was very low. Lots of hiking trails take off in different directions... 更多
The beds are large chunks of lava that came out of the base of the Cinder Cone. The top of much of them are coated with cinders that changed color depending on the heat of the lava they landed on, giving the top surface a painted-desert appearance as seen from the Cinder Cone. An interesting hike or canoe + hike... 更多
Starting at Butte Lake, you walk by this amazing lava flow, apparently laid down in the 17th Century. After walking by the Fantastic Lava Beds, you come up to Cinder Cone, which is a 400 foot high, well, cinder cone. The hike up is pretty strenuous, but there is an amazing view from the top. You see all over the... 更多
You'll need to drive out on a dirt road to see these beds, but they're worth the drive. Giant, chunky flows of lava rocks surround Butte Lake. Take the hike around the lake to see the beds from the opposite side. It's a lovely hike with that almost no one goes on so you'll get a bit of the lake... 更多
