The Abyss (Grand Canyon South Rim View) is a scheduled stop on the NPS Bus Service Red Line. This lookout is the closest you will get to a vertical drop of such magnitude. Make sure you walk along the rim to the right and find alternate views.

Really, how can you NOT rate any location along the canyon anything but a 5? Be sure to WALK the rim trail and see what 99% of the bus riders miss.
I went to the Abyss in hopes of photographing one of the 70+ California condors that are being rehabilitated to the canyon. I saw none, but it was windy and a bit sprinkly. I did very much enjoy the view. I'd have to say one of my favorites on the south rim.
This is the stop to get the view of a straight drop to the bottom. It is the farthest drop in the canyon. Worth the stop on the Red route to see. if you have kids keep them close
This is a good spot to appreciate how far down the Grand Canyon actually goes (almost a mile). Very impressive! Worth a quick stop when touring Hermit Road Drive (West side of the village).
There are several viewpoints along the south rim and the rim trail, and you may begin to skip some if you go in the winter, are in a car and hopping from one to another. Don't skip The Abyss, it is a specacular view.
