Don't have far to walk once you get off the shuttle. It's a quick on and off point unless you are going to walk along the rim trail. The biggest part of the Canyon view here is the big drop off.
This attraction is justly names. Beautiful as you stare down and across this vast expanse. You can see for miles. Unless you really love heights, it is hard to walk close to the edge.
Take the Park shuttle and get off at The Abyss. Take a short walk and absorb the incredible views. Every stop has something worth experiencing.
The Abyss (Grand Canyon South Rim View) is a scheduled stop on the NPS Bus Service Red Line. This lookout is the closest you will get to a vertical drop of such magnitude. Make sure you walk along the rim to the right and find alternate views.
There are 8 different viewpoints along Hermit Road on the South Rim and each one offers something a little different than the others which is why you do not want to miss any of them. Really, how can you NOT rate any location along the canyon anything but a 5? Be sure to WALK the rim trail and see what 99% of the bus riders miss.
I went to the Abyss in hopes of photographing one of the 70+ California condors that are being rehabilitated to the canyon. I saw none, but it was windy and a bit sprinkly. I did very much enjoy the view. I'd have to say one of my favorites on the south rim.
