So little is known about these enigmatic figures. I have wanted to see them for years. Unprotected, down a side road, on the edge of a working farm, a simple sign, a small ancient graveyard .....if only stones could talk........they felt like a link to our pre Christian past...... I only hope that they continue to survive unmolested.
We were staying at Lusty Beg island and decided to visit Caldragh cemetery on our leaving just to see the Janus figure and the Lusty man which feature so prominently in literature of the area. I don't know why but we were expecting something huge and awe inspiring almost Easter Island-esque but these figures are modest and of a relatively... 更多
cemetery over a thousand years old. Known for the so-called statue of Janus - actually a figure with two faces called Janus as Roman deity.. I do not know to whom that offerings go, but just in case I dropped few coins also.
we found the stone circle at drumskinny and was told of the stone statues at boa island, really amazing history, but a bit hard to find as we weren't told to look for the cemetery. Lovely area to explore
Yes the surroundings are untidy. Basically this cemetery is on the edge of a cattle farm. I visited early am and the place was quiet and tranquil. I don't know the history of the stones but they are very well publicised and interesting. It would be easy to miss the signage so if planning to visit use a map.
This is a small cemetery with a 1,000 year old monument - interesting to see. It led us to Lusty Beg Island and the restaurant there which was lovely.
Every time you open a travel mag or brochure about Fermanagh they feature the Janus Figure to encourage you to visit the region and discover this 1500 year double faced stone statue. It is in a rocky, run-down old cemetery which is very dangerous underfoot and very badly needs some TLC! It is a disgrace that the two ancient figures... 更多
We were worried we would miss the small sign to Caldragh cemetery but actually found it quite easy to find. We were alone when we arrived, but we soon joined by three other visitors. It was amazing to be so close to something so very old and mysterious. It is clear that the stone was broken and then placed on... 更多
It is an old graveyard where a lot of tomb stones were covered with moss and grass. The Janus statue was very nice to see and was in good condition tough. Also interesting to see was that the old graveyard was still in use, because there was a grave there that somebody has been recently buried in. Not the easiest... 更多
been here a few times , just to keep a check on the lovely ancient stones which if not cared for soon will undoubtedly disappear due to a lack of care . Interesting to look at knowing that someone was buried here from pagan times , now that's a long time , you can reach it from Belleek or from... 更多
