It is now the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world in terms of burials. At the suggestion of King George V, who visited the cemetery in 1922, the Cross of Sacrifice was placed on the original large pill-box. There are three other pill-boxes in the cemetery.

There are now 11,956 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War buried or commemorated in Tyne Cot Cemetery. 8,369 of the burials are unidentified but there are special memorials to more than 80 casualties known or believed to be buried among them. Other special memorials commemorate 20 casualties whose graves were destroyed by shell fire. There are 4 German burials, 3 being unidentified.

The cemetery was designed by Sir Herbert Baker.

The TYNE COT MEMORIAL forms the north-eastern boundary of Tyne Cot Cemetery and commemorates nearly 35,000 servicemen from the United Kingdom and New Zealand who died in the Ypres Salient after 16 August 1917 and whose graves are not known. The memorial stands close to the farthest point in Belgium reached by Commonwealth forces in the First World War until the final advance to victory.

The memorial was designed by Sir Herbert Baker with sculpture by F V Blundstone.

Very moving experience. Well kept graves from fallen soldiers of WW1. Small amount of artefacts and letters on show. Well worth a visit.

It is difficult to know which is the more touching - the row upon row of whits gravestones often simply with the words A Soldier of The Great War on them or the thousands of names on the walls remembering soldiers from all over the World who died in Flanders. This is a place ideally to be visited toward the... 更多

The majority of the graves here have no names which I found very upsetting. The wall around the cemetery, like the Menin Gate, holds the names of around 34,000 men who have no named grave. This cemetery is an amazing place to visit.

Huge, beautifully maintained, and obviously humbling. Must-see. If possible, avoid going when all the bus tours are there. Though I didn't do this, if I were to return I might try going early morning or just before sunset.

A reminder of the sin called war. A place to be with yourself, to absorb the silence, to observe the graves and a reminder of the necessity of world peace. A must visit if you are nearby. Good connectivity via DeLijn buses if you do not own a mode of transport. Do check the timings are frequency is less on... 更多

It was quite late when we visited Tyne Cot cemetery and we were the only two people there. The silence made it all the more poignant. The sheer volume of headstones is overwhelming. The visitor centre was closed and it would have been nice to go in there, but it didn't detract from the overall visit. The cemetary is extremely... 更多

The new visitor centre adds a better understanding of the significance of the location and the people who took part and died

This was my 4th visit to Tyne Cot cemetrey and it still hit me hard remembering all the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice to give us the freedom we have today.

Tyne Cot does not give any answers to your questions. It makes You ask "where those few metres of muddy terrain valuable enough to kill all these young men?"

We almost missed coming here and am glad we turned around. Yes there were school trips of loud disrespectful children but you get passed that when you think about what you're actually seeing. Each headstone a person, imagine giving a talk stood up in front of so many? The visitors centre has some interesting artefacts and some sad stories describing... 更多
