Most of the reviewers have condused Punakha Dzong with Wangdue Dzong. Punakha Dzong is the one between two rivers Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu , while Wangdue Dzong which is half hr drive from Punakha is on TOP of a cliff and over looks the confluence of combined rivers flowing from Punakha with another river. This dzong is located on top of the ridge. Sadly this dzong caught fire in 2012 and was badly destroyed. It is currently being rebuilt and not open to public. I only managed to take a photo below, while traveling from Thimphu to Trongsa.
watching the dancers here was a highlight of my trip to this place!
the size of the space was impressive.
however, make sure you find a restroom before you head there (the bathroom was not very clean).
This dzong has a fine commanding position on a promontory above the Wangdue river. However, after all the superstructure was burned to cinders in a fire, the government is currently rebuilding everything in a faithful reproduction of the original - and thereby keeping the local craftsmen up to date in traditional building techniques.
